Health benefits of wine

June 15, 2016
Wine is delicious. There's no denying that fact. We all love to indulge in a glass or two or whole bottle of wine every now and then. But did you know about its numerous health benefits? Wine has a number of health benefits that help it to be one of the healthier boozes that you can drink. So pop a cork and check out these health benefits that wine offers.

  • Wine will help promote longevity. A 2007 Finnish study showed that wine drinkers have a 34 percent lower mortality rate than beer or spirits drinkers.

  • Moderate wine drinkers who have chronic high blood pressure are 30 percent less likely to have a heart attack than nondrinkers, according to a 2007 Harvard School of Public Health study.

  • Red wine has some health benefits that white wine does not have, and vice versa. One of those is the reduced risk of heart disease. Red wine protects against heart disease thanks to the procyanidins that are found within it. Wines from Sardinia and southwest France have more procyanidins than other wines.

  • Moderate wine drinkers are 43 percent less likely to develop cataracts than beer drinkers. And for you non-drinkers, you are 32 percent more likely to develop cataracts than those who drink alcohol.

  • Another win for the red wine. Red wine helps to cut the risk of colon cancer by 45 percent according to a 2005 Stony Brook University study.

  • Red just keeps on taking the cake here. Moderate consumption of red wine will help to cut the risk of colon cancer by 45 percent according to a Stony Brook University study of 2,291 people over a four-year period.

  • Everyone likes a sharp mind. According to a Columbia University study of 1,416 people, brain function will decline at a faster rate in nondrinkers than in moderate drinkers. We'll cheers to that!

While there are numerous other health benefits to drinking wine, the key to get the most of the health benefits is moderation. Having one or two glasses of wine a day is a good moderation, however, drinking in excess will not only cancel out these health benefits, but will also set you back a little bit. Drinking too much can lead to thin bones in women. In addition, a Seven Countries Study published in the International Journal of Epidemiology in August 2000 revealed that heavy drinkers were known to die two years earlier than moderate drinkers, on average. However, moderate drinkers outlived nondrinkers by the same amount. Read More...

Treat your dad to a Shooters burger this Father's Day

June 15, 2016
Father's Day is right around the corner and Shooters Wood Fire Grill has the perfect way to celebrate. Bring him in for one of our specialty burgers that is sure to leave him feeling satisfied. Skip grilling this year, and let Shooters cook for you. Here's a look at our specialty burgers and what he can choose from.

The Mac
We take your love of mac and cheese to a whole new level by breading it and frying it and putting it on top of your burger. Don't forget the other usual toppings, lettuce and tomato, as well as a rich house made cheese sauce. If you have to ask if it needs more cheese, it needs more cheese.

This is not for the faint of heart. The sidewinder will set your taste buds on fire (good thing there's plenty of beer here). Not only does it have lettuce and tomatoes, but it also features jalapeno straws and a spicy habanero infused cream cheese mayo. Don't say we didn't warn you.

For the Italian in you, the Soprano burger features pepperoni, deli ham, melted mozzarella cheese, and Italian mayo all piled high on a fresh baked focaccia roll. If you're talking in an Italian accent for the rest of the day, feel free to blame us.

Bourbon Bacon Cheddar
For those moments when you want to have some bourbon and a hamburger, now you don't have to decide between one or the other. The Bourbon Bacon Cheddar combines all things that are good in this world: cheddar cheese, bacon, fried onion straws, lettuce, tomatoes, and a rich bourbon glaze. Excuse while we whip the drool off our mouth.

Double Pig
It is America after all, and Americans like their meat! Pulled pork and bacon sit atop this hamburger, along with melted cheddar cheese, and a chipotle mayo, not to mention the lettuce, tomato, and sesame seed roll. Bonus points to anyone who orders it just by oinking.

Dakota Jack
For the true South Dakotan in your group, the Dakota Jack features all of the things that are perfect on a hamburger. From pepper jack cheese to carmelized onions, from tangy house BBQ sauce, to the usual lettuce and tomatoes, it's the perfect burger to celebrate National Hamburger month with.

Gourmet Mushroom and Swiss
For those of you who like to eat with your pinkies raised, we've got the Gourmet Mushroom and Swiss burger that features the usual suspects: sautéed mushrooms and melted swiss cheese, as well as a drizzle of rich balsamic glaze. Pinkies up please.

Classic Patty Melt
For those of you who are purely traditional, we've got the classic patty melt, with marble rye toast and carmelized onions and swiss cheese. It just doesn't get any better than that.

Check out our menu for all other offerings. What better way to celebrate Father's Day than with a big juicy burger? Read More...

Budweiser changes its name to America leading up to elections

June 7, 2016
Nothing says America like an ice cold beer on a hot summer day while sitting lakeside with your closest friends. Well, beer just got a bit more patriotic thanks to Anheuser-Busch. Beginning May 23, all Budweiser cans and bottles will no longer say Budweiser. Instead, they will read America, in an attempt to make America taste great again.

The name change comes in an attempt to instill a bit more patriotism in drinkers and “to inspire drinkers to celebrate America and Budweiser's shared values of freedom and authenticity,” according to Anheuser-Busch. As if beer drinking wasn't patriotic enough, now we have more of a reason to enjoy it.

If changing the name to America wasn't patriotic enough, words on the bottles and cans will also feature lyrics from the Star Spangled Banner and lines from the Pledge of Allegiance. The Statue of Liberty may also appear on some cans or bottles. So now you can say the pledge while drinking an ice cold brew. Have we mentioned lately how much we love America?

Some of the other changes included are changing “King of Beers” to “E Pluribus Unum,” “The World Renowned” to “Land of the Free,” and “Anheuser-Busch, Inc.” to “Liberty and Justice for All.” Changes got so detailed that legal slang such as “Trademark” was changed to “Indivisible,” and “Registered” was changed to “Since 1776.” Talk about committing to change.

“We are embarking on what should be the most patriotic summer that this generation has ever seen,” Ricardo Marques, vice president of Budweiser, said in a statement.

The patriotic rebranding will go through the election in November, so depending on the outcome of the presidential election you can take a nice big swig of America either is celebration or in desperation for something great; only time will tell.

"We thought nothing was more iconic than Budweiser and nothing was more iconic than America," says Tosh Hall, creative director at the can's branding firm JKR.

So here's to America. Let us all raise an ice cold Budweiser, er America, this summer with a sense of pride in our beer, er country, and toast to making America taste great again.
